It is hard to believe there are only 10 days left until Christmas. Where has this year gone? It seems like just a second ago I was sitting in the park reading a book on a hot day drinking an iced coffee and soaking up the sunshine. My mom was right, the older you get the faster time flies.
The Christmas season is here whether we are ready for it or not. It is difficult to not get caught up in the hustle and bustle and the commercial side of it. Making lists and checking them twice. Planning meals for family get togethers. Shopping for the perfect gifts for everyone on our lists. Decorating the house with tinsel and garland perfectly strung lights. Cleaning the house for company soon to arrive. Baking cookies and preparing food for work carry-ins. Addressing Christmas cards and mailing packages. Attending school and church holiday programs and services.
For many people this time of year is happy, fun and joyous. For others it is stressful and annoying. And for some it is depressing. The category I fall into seems to be different every year. I am single and spending the holidays alone again though. I don’t get much time off work (only Christmas Day) so it will not be a relaxing time for me. I do not have a significant other again this year to share the holidays with. I might get a couple of presents to open from friends and family. I do not have a tree full of gifts to give. I have a few that I have not wrapped yet and a few more to buy but it can wait. I don’t really feel the rush. And it really isn’t that I am not in the Christmas spirit. I think this year more than ever before I truly am remembering what this season is for…a glorious celebration of the birth of Christ.
It is OKAY to be alone during the holidays. If you are feeling lonely or depressed this is the perfect time to give back. Donate time to the homeless shelter or the salvation army or to your church. If you do not have a church, find one. There is no better way to feel fulfilled than to give. You might be able to share an encouraging word with someone else who is feeling lonely or having a difficult time coping this time of year as well. By showing love and kindness to others in need we find true joy within ourselves. Instead of crying or complaining turn your negative outlook into a positive and be a light for others in need.
Jesus is the reason for this season. Be thankful. Show gratitude. Love others. I promise you, you will feel the spirit of Christmas if you do. I am choosing to be joyous and happy this year. We are alive because of Him.
