Day 1 ~ Ash Wednesday ~ 46 Days of Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday, a day marking a season of fasting for Christians. It is the first day of the Lenten season, which will last for 46 days, ending on Holy Saturday. The six Sundays between now and Easter are excluded from the fast as they are meant to be set aside for feasting. The 40 days of fasting originated to mirror Jesus’ 40 days in the desert where he endured great temptation from Satan.

Yes, I googled that to be certain I was correct. Different denominations calculate the days differently but I think the 46 days/40 fasting is most common. I was raised in the Presbyterian Church so I have been familiar with this event my entire life. However, I was away from church for many years and did not participate because it didn’t mean much to me. Today it means something.

People sometimes ask, “What are you giving up for Lent?” For me, it is personal but I am participating. And I have decided to publish a blog entry every day until Easter as well…46 Days of Lent. 46 days leading up to the day that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He gave up so much for us…. what will you give up for Him? This would also be a very good time to commit to reading the Bible on a daily basis and possibly some type of devotional reading. I will be doing both.

As we are approaching Valentine’s Day weekend…I will leave you with this quote I read today posted by a friend on Instagram:

“The shape of true love isn’t a diamond. It’s a cross.” ~ Alicia Bruxvoort

Amen!

Blessings,
