Oh how I thought I was a big weirdo as I was growing up. I felt really different than my friends, which made me try to fit in even more. I failed to see how special being different was. I still feel different at 44 years old. The difference now is that I do not try to fit in.
What changed?
Time. And growing in my faith.
It has taken a long time to let it all go. I’m not 100% there yet but I am getting there with each new experience I go through. It helps to meet people who have similar feelings.
Those “me too” moments happen to us not by coincidence. I made a new friend recently and she basically said something along the lines of that she was so glad we have become friends because she had finally met someone just as weird, or weirder, than she is! Her comment made me smile. But 30, 20, 10, or even 5 years ago I might have been offended.
We are not here to take the same exact path. How boring would the world be if we all believed the same things, wore the same clothes, watched the same shows, pursued the same degree or job, got married at 22 and had 1.87 kids? In that case we may as well be the walking dead.
I heard something the other day that kind of put a lot of things together for me regarding this topic. One of my favorite authors described herself as one of four types of women. It was quite simple.
There are women who place career before family. There are women who place family before career. There are women who try to do both, usually with difficulty. And then there are the “mystics.”
The mystics can be from any of the three groups or none at all. They are the ones who basically say no thank you to what society sees as normal. They are the ones who choose freedom. They are the ones who follow that odd and sometimes bizarre calling that magically takes a tight hold on their hearts to do something beyond normal.
I am a mystic. You might be too. If so, celebrate who you are…do not hide behind the crowd trying to fit in. You have a lot of work to do; the clock is ticking. You only get ONE LIFE.
Be who you are and you will be free. Trust your gut feeling about it because that inner voice is from God. Believe in who you are and that is all that you need to do to start living the life you were born to live…a mystical life of freedom to be you.
Blessings,
